What is Café de los Angelitos?

Café de los Angelitos is one of over 80 officially recognized bares notables in Buenos Aires, each with its own unique history and identity. This iconic café is a historic tango venue where the legendary Carlos Gardel frequented from 1912 when he began his artistic career.

Origins and Evolution

The café was originally opened in 1890 by Italian immigrant Bautista Fazio and was initially named Bar Rivadavia. During this time, the Balvanera neighborhood was on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, making the café a popular gathering place for working-class locals.

The café became a hub for Argentine art, where payadores (folk singers) and later tango composers would gather to perform.

In the 1920s, Ángel Salgueiro purchased the bar, renovated it, and renamed it Café de los Angelitos. Its proximity to the National Congress led to the café becoming a favorite among politicians, artists, intellectuals, and writers.

Despite the economic crises that plagued Argentina throughout the 20th century, the café managed to stay open until 1992, when it closed after 100 years of operation. However, in 2006, Café de los Angelitos was reconstructed and reopened in 2007, preserving its historical charm while incorporating modern elements.

Design and Atmosphere

The café features dark wood, stained glass, bronze accents, and traditional tiles that give it a classic and elegant personality. The walls are adorned with 350 carefully selected historical photographs, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Buenos Aires in the early 20th century.

The main café area is complemented by a performance hall, a souvenir boutique, and a special exhibition space. Every day, a top-tier tango show is performed, adding to the café’s vibrant cultural experience.
